The label can be added voluntarily to garments from October 1, 2025, but will be mandatory for all products sold in France as of October 1, 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">The measure aims, on one hand, to help citizens make more informed and responsible purchasing decisions, and on the other, to guide brands in their eco-design processes and highlight the efforts of those that produce more sustainably\u2014rethinking their supply chains and adopting lower-impact industrial and commercial practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>The calculation methodology<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">The label includes a number, known as the <em>co\u00fbt environnemental<\/em> (previously <em>Ecoscore<\/em>), which reflects the impact points of the garment on the planet. These points are calculated using various criteria covering the entire life cycle of the product, from raw material production to end-of-life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>The <em>co\u00fbt environnemental<\/em> is calculated based on various criteria related to the entire life cycle of the garment, from the production of raw materials to the end of its useful life.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">To establish the methodology, more than 400 case studies from several dozen brands were analysed in 2022, and an expert committee was created to guide the public authorities\u2019 work and help shape the system. Through a co-creation process, numerous workshops were held with industry representatives, civil society, life cycle assessment (LCA) experts, and academia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">The method is based on the European Commission\u2019s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology. It also takes into account microfiber emissions, issues linked to the export of used clothing outside Europe, and garment durability. The methodology allows the environmental cost of each garment to be calculated based on parameters defined by the manufacturer, such as product type (trousers, T-shirt, etc.), material (cotton, linen, polyester, etc.), and country of production, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>The method is based on the European Commission\u2019s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">The impacts considered include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:25px\">&#8211; water and natural resource consumption, as well as the use of phytosanitary products, during garment production;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:25px\">&#8211; transport modes used to deliver the product to consumers;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:25px\">&#8211; microfiber emissions, especially during washing;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:25px\">&#8211; the garment\u2019s recyclability or reparability;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:25px\">&#8211; physical durability (resistance to wear and tear from use and maintenance) and non-physical durability (the likelihood of being worn for a long time, considering aspects such as reparability). These durability factors are gradually being integrated into the impact score calculation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">The result is a number: the higher it is, the greater the product\u2019s environmental impact. This way, consumers can compare the environmental footprint of different garments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>The consumer can compare the environmental impact of different garments and thus make more informed and responsible decisions.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">Brands that voluntarily wish to include the label on their products must declare their information and data on the portal <em><a href=\"http:\/\/ecobalyse.beta.gouv.fr\">ecobalyse.beta.gouv.fr<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Products carrying the label<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ineditinnova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/penjadors-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12205 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ineditinnova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/penjadors-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ineditinnova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/penjadors-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ineditinnova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/penjadors-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ineditinnova.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/penjadors.jpg 1500w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/683;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">The system covers underwear (boxers and briefs), socks and other undergarments, shirts, jeans and other trousers, skirts and dresses, swimwear, coats and jackets, and T-shirts and polos. Excluded are accessories and footwear, second-hand products, leather items, PPE, and products with more than 20% of their weight composed of non-textile fibres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>The French regulation and its implementation phases<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">The environmental labelling system was introduced under the <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legifrance.gouv.fr\/download\/pdf?id=x7Gc7Ys-Z3hzgxO5KgI0zSu1fmt64dDetDQxhvJZNMc=\"><em>Loi Climat et R\u00e9silience<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/em> (Climate and Resilience Law), one of the landmark pieces of legislation for France\u2019s ecological transition. Article 2 of the law requires environmental labelling to inform consumers \u201creliably and in an easily understandable way\u201d about \u201cthe environmental impact of goods and services considered over their entire life cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">The decree and ministerial order regulating the environmental cost label were subject to public consultation in late 2024 and validated by the European Commission in May 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:25px\">The implementation will happen in two phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:25px\"><strong>Phase 1, from October 1, 2025, to October 1, 2026<\/strong>: voluntary communication, with only brands able to calculate and disclose the environmental cost of their products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:25px\"><strong>Phase 2, starting October 1, 2026<\/strong>: the system becomes mandatory.
