They are firmly committed to organic agriculture and sustainable winemaking and they are pioneers in emissions reduction. From January 2022, Her\u00e8ncia Alt\u00e9s is one of the 4 Spanish wineries adhered to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwcawine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Wineries for Climate Action<\/a> (IWCA) initiative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We talked to Rafael De Haan, co-owner of the winery with N\u00faria Alt\u00e9s, about his commitment to decarbonisation and his collaboration with our circular metrics team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:30px\"><strong>What does invest in sustainability mean to you?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The two pillars of the company are quality and sustainability. All decisions we make must be consistent with these values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Before we became members of the IWCA we made various investments under the umbrella of sustainability, such as installing solar panels in the winery and developing an environmental project. <strong>Now, as members of the IWCA, we have a clear roadmap: to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.<\/strong> As silver members of the IWCA we participate in the United Nations &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/racetozero.unfccc.int\/system\/race-to-zero\/\">Race To Zero<\/a>&#8221; and we are preparing a reduction plan to reach Net Zero by 2025, and a 50% reduction by 2030<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The main investments are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2013 <strong>New lithium batteries<\/strong> to store sunlight and avoid the group&#8217;s diesel consumption.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2013 Expansion of <strong>solar panels<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2013 <strong>Installation of a water purification system to clean the washing water from the winery<\/strong> to avoid transporting it to the field by lorry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2013 <strong>Reducing the weight of bottles by 30%<\/strong>. Almost universal impact on our carbon footprint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2013 <strong>Change the vehicle fleet to electric<\/strong> and install electric chargers on the winery for workers, visitors, and transporters. These chargers are 100% solar-powered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2013 <strong>Selection of suppliers aligned with Race To Zero<\/strong>. There are already major hauliers signed up to this initiative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:30px\"><strong><strong>What does membership of the IWCA bring you?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Now, being a member of the IWCA gives us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u2013 <strong>Internal organisation<\/strong>. because there is a very clear roadmap that we have to follow, such as the &#8220;Race To Zero&#8221;, the calculation of our emissions every 2 years and the reduction of these emissions every year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u2013 <strong>The collective part is very valuable<\/strong>, as there are round tables and briefings on technology that can help us reduce emissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u2013 <strong>The recognition of the IWCA<\/strong> throughout the wine sector is growing. We hope that it will help to position Her\u00e8ncia Alt\u00e9s as a reference or, at least, to recognise us as participants in the wine sector&#8217;s movement towards sustainability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:30px\"><strong><strong><strong>What are the benefits you receive from your commitment to sustainability?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Some of the investments and actions we have implemented help us to reduce costs, such as the installation of solar panels and batteries or the reduction of bottle weight. What are your challenges for the future?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Indirect emissions<\/strong> (Scope 3) <strong>represent 91% of our carbon footprint calculation, and logistics has the biggest impact<\/strong> on this part. We have to find a solution to reduce these emissions, certainly with a selection of suppliers aligned with us, even if their service is worth more than other suppliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:30px\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>What do you highlight about working with in\u00e8dit?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>It is an integrated partner that is accompanying us on the journey towards sustainabilit<em>y<\/em><\/strong>. Together we are discovering and learning a lot. We share experiences with other participants in the sector and try to optimise all the opportunities for help that exist to carry out the necessary actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:30px\"><strong>We see that the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herenciaaltes.com\/pages\/vinos-sostenibles\"><strong>complete carbon footprint calculation study<\/strong><\/a> <strong>that you have carried out with our circular metrics team is published on your website.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As members of the IWCA, our data should be published.
