Client
Nomon is a Barcelona-based company specialising in indoor clocks that merges industrial design and jewellery with the aim of “restoring the prominence and dignity that the wall clock had in the past, and once again making it a prestigious and distinctive object in our homes and offices.” The clocks are handmade in Barcelona using traditional methods and innovative techniques, with high-quality materials treated with jewellery criteria in finishing and presentation.
For Nomon, sustainability is about designing timeless, high-quality objects that last as long as possible. They provide spare parts for each product to ensure they have a long lifespan and durability.
Challenge
To redesign the packaging for one of their clocks, applying eco-design criteria.
What was done?
The references of the company’s clocks and their packaging systems were analysed to detect applicable eco-design strategies. As a result of this analysis, one packaging reference was prioritised for eco-design following the detected strategies. Specifically, a package with polyurethane foam inside, with an associated impact of 1.91 kg CO2eq and a unit cost of 15 euros.
The proposal was redesigned: it was proposed to use only renewable and 100% recyclable materials (98% cardboard, 1% paper, and 1% adhesive), the elements of the packaging were redistributed to optimise space and reduce the necessary material, and the height of the box was reduced by 2 cm.
Results
-90%
GHGs emissions. The associated impact of the new packaging is 0.19 kg CO2 eq, while the previous one was 1.91 kg CO2 eq.
-10 euros
The unit cost of each package with the new design is €4.30, while the original was €15; thanks to the new packaging proposal, more than €10 will be saved per package.
Improves the perception of product quality and sustainability, packaging, and the company. Facilitates the final packaging management.
Conclusions
The project was the starting point for the company to extrapolate the characteristics of the proposed redesign to the rest of the references applying eco-design criteria, mainly monomateriality strategies and renewable materials, as well as standardisation and modularity.
Currently, Nomon has a single packaging for various products. Thus, it has maximised efficiency in the use of materials and reduced both waste and environmental impact in the production and transportation process.
