Client
Provital produces natural active ingredients for cosmetic formulations at its production plant in Barberà del Vallès (Barcelona). It also has five subsidiaries in France, Poland, Brazil, China and the United States. Its average annual production is 1,300 tonnes of active ingredients.
The company was founded in Barcelona in 1979 and has since expanded globally. It currently operates in more than forty countries and works with over one hundred distributors.
inèdit has been calculating Provital’s carbon footprint since 2021, and it has been third-party verified since then.
Challenge
To calculate the organizational carbon footprint in accordance with the ISO 14064-1:2018 standard, with the aim of enabling third-party verification.
What was done?
The study assessed Provital’s activity from a life cycle perspective.
The emissions inventory is based on data collected throughout the year, and results were structured according to the following categories, in line with ISO 14064-1:2018:
- Category 1: direct greenhouse gas emissions from stationary combustion, fugitive emissions and company-owned vehicles.
- Category 2: indirect emissions from imported energy (electricity in this case).
- Category 3: indirect emissions from transport of raw materials, packaging and office supplies, as well as distribution of finished products; employee commuting; business travel; and waste transport.
- Category 4: indirect emissions from products and services used by the organization (raw materials, packaging, office supplies, waste management, water, fuel production and outsourced warehousing).
Calculations were carried out using èdit, inèdit’s environmental quantification tool.

3,5%
Direct emissions (Category 1)
1%
Indirect emissions from imported energy (Category 2)
43,3%
Indirect emissions from transport (Category 3)
52,2%
Indirect emissions from products used by the organization (Category 4)
Conclusions
Managing its carbon footprint is a core objective of Provital’s global strategy. In this process, the company is supported by inèdit, which has been calculating and verifying its carbon footprint since 2021.
Over time, Provital’s internal team has developed a robust and increasingly efficient methodology for data management, calculation and verification.
This has supported the company’s sustainability strategy and laid the groundwork for a future emissions reduction plan.
