Client
is the largest sawmill in Catalonia. Originating from Berguedà and founded in 1970, from its inception it has combined tradition and innovation to transform forest natural capital into economic, social, and environmental value, following strict protocols that ensure the conservation and regeneration of forests. Over the decades, it has consolidated and diversified its business lines with a single philosophy: modernize the wood industry and strengthen the competitiveness of the forestry sector without ever losing its roots in the territory or respect for nature.
Currently, it is the only sawmill in Catalonia capable of processing small-diameter Mediterranean wood. It manages up to 800 tons of wood per day, which is transformed into sawn timber, chips, bark, and sawdust, in a circular production model that generates no waste. Soon, Grup Boix will open a cross-laminated timber (CLT) production plant, a move that reinforces the company’s commitment to go further in forest management and in the use of local resources. This plant — the only one of its kind in Catalonia and the fifth in Spain — will mark a step forward in the construction sector’s transition toward more sustainable models.
In addition to wood processing, the company has developed strategic divisions such as the production of certified industrial packaging (EPAL, UIC) and the construction of mixed wood-and-steel barriers for roads, parks, and urban and rural environments, always with an integrative approach and respect for the landscape.
The challenge
Define a shared value business plan to identify the most important ESG topics for the Group, strengthen the holistic integration of sustainability within the company, and advance toward obtaining B Corp certification.
What was done?
Grup Boix’s ESG starting point was assessed using B Lab’s B Impact Assessment (BIA) tool, and a double materiality analysis was carried out to identify the ESG topics most relevant to the company, both in terms of their impact on people and the environment and their financial health. The double materiality analysis was conducted following the guidelines of the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG), the body that establishes the methodological foundations for CSRD reporting.
This evaluation and analysis process was translated into an Action Plan with a series of proposed actions to transform the way certain day-to-day operations are managed, as well as other actions based on the company’s needs.
Results
1
- Double materiality analysis that allowed Grup Boix to identify, map, and gain a deeper understanding of its main impacts on people and the planet, as well as assess the resulting financial risks and opportunities.
36
- 36 improvement actions to advance toward obtaining B Corp certification.
Conclusions
Thanks to the double materiality analysis, the company identified the material topics on which Grup Boix should focus — either because they can directly affect its economic health, because it has a responsibility to reduce its impact on the planet or people, or because its stakeholders consider them relevant issues.
