Client
Nederland is an independent family-owned company based in Viladecans, Barcelona, dedicated to processing cocoa products for the global market since 1935.
It produces cocoa mass, cocoa powder and cocoa butter, products with applications in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Half of its production is exported, and it operates in more than 75 countries.
Challenge
Aware that sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the global cocoa industry, Nederland required an ESG strategy to align with emerging regulatory frameworks such as the CSRD and the EUDR, and to meet the expectations of clients and investors. With this strategy, the company seeks to strengthen its position and prepare for future challenges and opportunities, as well as enhance its operational resilience.
What was done?
With the aim of identifying Nederland’s level of maturity in sustainability and establishing a solid foundation for action, inèdit applied its proprietary self-assessment tool, Autoavalua’t. This tool enables an internal review of the current situation across different ESG dimensions and guides a structured reflection on key strengths and areas for improvement, helping to prioritise actions and inform strategic decision-making.
To understand the company’s ESG context and identify the driving forces and trends shaping it, a double materiality analysis was carried out following the CSRD methodology. This exercise identifies and prioritises key ESG aspects according to the degree of influence and the impact the company may have on them, as well as the extent of their direct effect on economic performance.
In parallel, sustainability trends were compiled.
Once the starting points, driving forces and external trends were identified, sustainability initiatives were prioritised according to their contribution to achieving the company’s vision and their technical and economic feasibility. From there, a roadmap was defined and translated into summary sheets for each action to be implemented in the short, medium and long term.
Results
25
Initiatives, classified according to whether they contribute to environmental, social or governance aspects. They are presented in the form of action sheets, which include a description of the initiative, implementation advice, KPIs, activation timeline, materiality level, priority, resource intensity required, alignment with BCorp requirements, and role allocation based on the RASCI matrix.
Conclusions
Nederland’s ESG strategy involved conducting an in-depth analysis to understand the company’s starting point regarding environmental, social and governance aspects. This has laid the foundation for building a robust, relevant sustainability strategy that is aligned with the real challenges of its operating context. The strategy has been translated into 25 initiatives that will not only help the company articulate a narrative consistent with emerging regulations and the expectations of clients and investors, but also become more resilient in facing future challenges.
