Client
Herència Altés is a family-owned winery in Terra Alta (Catalonia) dedicated to vine cultivation and the production of organic wines. Sustainability is one of the company’s core principles, with the goal of achieving healthier soils and ensuring the continuity of agriculture. To this end, it actively works to reduce its carbon footprint both in the winery and in the vineyard, before and after the winemaking process, and on both a local and global scale.
Since 2021, the winery has been calculating its carbon footprint, and in 2022, it became a full member of the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA), a collaborative working group of wineries committed to reducing carbon emissions in the wine sector. In 2025, Herència Altés renewed its membership in the IWCA as a Silver Member.
Challenge
To quantify and assess the carbon footprint associated with Herència Altés’ activities in 2023, using a life cycle analysis approach and in accordance with the ISO 14064:2018 methodology, with the aim of obtaining third-party certification.
What was done?
The winery’s management team used inèdit’s èdit tool to independently quantify its environmental impacts. Specifically, they utilised a version tailored to the specific needs of wineries, a customisation funded by DO Catalunya.
To achieve this, they internally gathered data on the company’s activities throughout 2023.
The emission factors used were sourced from the Ecoinvent, Agribalyse, and Exiobase databases, and the software employed was SimaPro v9.5.
Inèdit played a key role in various phases of the greenhouse gas emissions inventory, providing technical support and guidance in data collection and carrying out the inventory calculations.

Conclusions
For the second consecutive year, De Haan Altés has calculated its carbon footprint and obtained third-party certification. To improve data accuracy, methodological enhancements will be introduced in future calculations, refining processes and improving data quality.
At the same time, potential action plans have been proposed to further reduce Herència Altés’ carbon footprint, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
