The repair of goods, a pillar of the circular economy and a business opportunity
inèdit analyses the potential of repair in various commercial sectors in Catalonia in the study Activating Repair through Commerce, commissioned by the Consorci de Comerç, Artesania i Moda de Catalunya (CCAM).
Repair — returning a faulty product to a condition where it can perform the function for which it was created —, refurbishment — the process where the affected components of a product are repaired or replaced, which is then delivered to a new user — and remanufacturing — turning a used product into a new one through disassembly, inspection, cleaning, and replacement of faulty components — play a crucial role in promoting the circular economy. These practices help preserve objects and products that would otherwise become waste and maintain traditional craftsmanship skills and knowledge. The potential of repair in various commercial sectors in Catalonia is analysed in the study Activating Repair through Commerce, prepared by inèdit on assignment for the Consorci de Comerç, Artesania i Moda de Catalunya (CCAM). The study was presented on 22 May, as part of the event “Innovating through Repair: New Opportunities for Commerce,” organised by the CCAM and the Catalan Waste Agency (ARC).
The study identifies twelve key criteria to consider for promoting the repair of goods in commerce and makes fifteen recommendations for public administrations, businesses, and associations. Among other recommendations, it suggests facilitating training programmes to ensure generational continuity in repair trades; creating a support programme for repair shops to strengthen them and ensure their continuity; providing an accurate and up-to-date register of repair shops; promoting International Repair Day in Catalonia; and establishing an advisory service for start-ups looking to integrate repair.
The public, receptive to repair
As part of the project, a survey was conducted to better understand users’ perspectives on repair, with 159 people responding. The results reveal that the population is receptive to repair: nearly 70% of respondents have undertaken some form of self-repair activity, and 60% have had a product repaired in the last six months. Additionally, almost 96% of users would like to see more repaired products on the market, and more than 80% would be willing to pay more for a repairable service or product. Regarding the factors that facilitate access to and use of repair services in Catalonia, the most important element (around 80%) is the proximity of repair activities and services.
The right to repair, a European imperative
In April, the European Parliament approved new measures to make repairs easier and more attractive for consumers. The new regulation requires manufacturers to offer repair services at reasonable prices once the warranty period has expired and to facilitate access to spare parts. Online platforms will also be created to help consumers find local repair services and shops with refurbished goods.
