Packimpact, the tool for environmental quantification in the packaging sector, presents its more comprehensive version 2.0

In 2023, Packimpact was introduced, a tool that allows SMEs in the packaging sector to calculate the carbon footprint, water consumption, and other environmental indicators, considering all stages of the life cycle, in a simple yet rigorous manner. In 2024, as part of the Packimpact 2.0 project, the tool has been refined by introducing more detailed data on the recyclability of flexible packaging, as well as new materials and manufacturing processes. It also added new functionalities to simplify how companies input their data. These updates make it an even more complete tool, tailored to the sector’s needs. Developed by the Packaging Cluster, with the technical contribution of inèdit, it uniquely provides precise, relevant information adapted to the specific characteristics of the packaging industry. Additionally, it can easily integrate into companies’ internal processes, enabling them to make informed decisions without requiring sustainability experts on staff.

The tool takes into account the impacts generated across all stages of a product’s life cycle: materials, manufacturing, transport, use, and end-of-life (in this case, for packaging). It contains specific information about the materials and processes necessary to manufacture and/or market each type of packaging, as well as recovery and recycling information. Packimpact is based on real and local data from companies in Spain’s packaging sector and offers an environmental self-declaration for products, allowing businesses to communicate their sustainability with quantitative data. Additionally, it provides comparative results on the environmental performance of different packaging types, which is very useful for making ecodesign decisions. It also allows users to export this information in Excel and PDF formats, to be shared internally or with clients.
