The project that allows you to travel and still implement the Deposit, Refund and Return System (SDDR)

Can you imagine taking away salad with a reusable packaging at Atocha station (Madrid) and return this packaging at Sants station (Barcelona)? This is now possible thanks to the Road To Reuse project!

The main objective of the project is to promote the reuse of food packaging in the restaurant sector through IoT technology. The initiative –developed by Bumerang, Ecogots, Areas, AEI Cluster Container and Packaging of the Valencian Community, AEI Cluster Foodservice and the inèdit team– will implement the Deposit, Refund and Return (SDDR) system in the main catering establishments in traveller environments through a client-API-microservices (app) architecture.

Our goal is to reduce the generation of waste and reduce the use of single-use plastic through more responsible sales and consumption patterns, through reuse. The European Union is increasingly committed to reuse, and this project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of a SDDR system for the take-away food sector.

Through the Bumerang App, you can get your Areas packaging (100% biodegradable and made by Ecogots from rice husks) and start making a difference!

With this action, Areas expects to reduce salad packaging by 30%, which complies to more than 44,000 salad units/year, and to save up to 1000 kg of plastic in a year.

Sofía Garín, project manager at inèdit and head of UX of the project, says that Road To Reuse “is a clear example of collaboration between companies to make reuse possible. To be able to design a good solution, we need pilot tests and collaboration, not only from companies, but also from consumers”.

She adds that it is the perfect example of how inèdit’s circular metrics and ecodesign teams work together to achieve the purpose of the same project
